1.  Using iPod and iTunes in the Classroom

Thursday, January 31, 2008

4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Dolores Street School

22526 Dolores Street Carson, California

presented by Carlos, Carson St. and Allan, Dolores St.

Sponsored by the Dolores Street Technology Club.

This presentation is free of charge and is open to anyone. There are NO salary points or any other type of credit being offered. The presentation itself is designed to show you some of the capabilities of the iPod and how it can be incorporated into the educational experience. Although a number of functions and concepts will be demonstrated, the primary purpose of this presentation is for the individual teachers to determine how iPod technology can best be used in their particular classrooms.

Persons coming early will be treated — starting at 3:30 pm — with a variety of “vintage” and current iPod commercials and related content. This opening segment is for entertainment purposes only… some of the clips are hilarious! The main presentation will commence around 4:00 pm.

Please RSVP to Carlos or Allan if you or any of your colleagues plan to attend.

Details and Flyer at: http://www.lausd.k12.ca.us/District_8/tech.htm

Leadership

A. CA Technology Survey - this is the CA Technology Survey usually done by ONE person at a school. Each year Local 8 is among the first to get 100% completion. Please expect a fax sent to the school addressed to the Principal with link, logon, and password details. Knowledge of what was purchased and salvaged since March 2007 speeds the process.

A letter to the principal is found at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/et/rs/csts07schltr.asp

We would like Local 8 schools to be complete by March 7, 2008. This would give us a week to sort out any problems with data or the system.

B. School Based Technology Positions - Classified

Here are class code descriptions on positions schools can purchase for technology assistance:

C. LAUSDTalks Weekly Podcast - Local 8 Schools Featured

From the LAUSD or Local 8 Homepages a “LAUSDTalks” links is found.

Currently, LAUSDTalks requires an InsideLAUSD login. Plans are to have LAUSDTalks publicly available.

Since the debut of LAUSDTalks, three Local 8 schools have been featured:

Week of January 25, 2008 186th Street Elementary School “Steps Out For Peace”.
186th Street’s Third Annual Peace March was held on Friday, January 18, 2008, at the school. The march was in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the commitment the school has to the Peace Games Service Learning Project which helps students get involved with positive campus and community changes.

Week of December 12, 2007 Washington Preparatory High School’s grand opening of its new Margaret Wright Physical Education Building is dedicated.  Board Member Marguerite LaMonte, Principal Dr. Gail Greer, and others presided over the celebration. Washington Preparatory is the first of several middle and high schools in Board District 1 to undergo renovation of fitness centers.

Week of November 28, 2007 Leapwood Elementary School was visited by members of the Los Angeles Galaxy Soccer Team for a book giveaway and reading session with students.

Leapwood is the official adopted school of the Galaxy Soccer team. The event was sponsored by the Los Angeles Galaxy Foundation, Wonder of Reading Organization, and Reading Is Fundamental of Southern California. “These organizations promote family literacy programs and a life long love of learning,” according to the LAUSD TALKS announcer.

The site provides a contact link to begin to arrange a LAUSDTalks Podcast segment on your school.

IV. ITD Service Desk Repair Request Methods
Good way:
call the Service Desk: 323.224.2277 (not efficient for multiple requests)
Better way: Complete a WebForm for each computer or job
http://techsupport.lausd.net/webform.htm
Best way: a site person creates an account and submits requests for all staff from the Employee Self-Service Site http://techsupport.lausd.net/ess.htm (see the “click here” links on the page) The advantage with this method is one can go and review past requests.
An announcement is expected in late September or early October on additional services the Service Desk can perform for your school.

We are anticipating a list of services from the Service Desk soon.

V. Microsoft Settlement Update
Recommendations were provided to the Board Spring 2007 by the Local Superintendent’s designee committee. The LAUSD Superintendent has control of where the funds will be used at this time. The only spending has been on Secondary Read180 (as learned from an August meeting).
